CHAPTER

TWENTY-SEVEN

The dreaded three blasts came much too soon the following morning, lurching me out of a restless sleep. Yesterday, after the conclusion of the shitty day, I couldn’t wait to hit the pillow. Yet, when I made it up to my bunk, sleep didn’t come. Every time I closed my eyes and tried to clear my head, a slide show of unwanted images scrolled through my mind. Death, screams, and gore plagued me incessantly.

Unlike last time when the blare of the horn reached my ears, I didn’t jump out of my bed like the ship was on fire. Instead, I buried my head deeper into my pillow and listened to the damning sound repeat itself. In two hours I’d again plunge through the sky of the alien-infested planet, to face who knew what surprises the Synths had in store for us.

With a groan, I pulled myself out of my bunk just as Ness did the same. I grimaced at the sting of my busted lip, but quickly straightened my face. My grimace had reopened the wound, and I tasted blood. Sure, I could’ve had the annoying injury repaired in the med-bays, but I hadn’t wanted to venture down to grave deck. That’s where the morgues were and the auditorium that held mass services at the end of each campaign. I figured a busted lip wasn’t worth the paltry sights.

Soon, I again found myself in Gold Squad’s equipment room. The attendants looked as exhausted as I felt. Cups of coffee littered the tables and benches, some completely full, steaming into the air, others half-drunk and stale, a film of creamer floating on the muddy surface. The collection of damaged suits and helmets had decreased substantially since my last visit, and it wasn’t hard to tell the attendants didn’t get much rest during a campaign.

“What the hell happened to you, dude?” Cavelli asked, limping over to the racks of gleaming suits.

Dark circles rimmed his eyes and his disheveled ponytail had seen better days. “Did you forget to put your helmet on and walk into a wall again?”

Everyone chuckled quietly. Maybe they were too tired to tease me or maybe they could see I wasn’t in the mood to be teased. The bags under my eyes and my lip didn’t hide that fact.

“Let’s just say the training didn’t go so smoothly,” I replied, donning the suit Cavelli had delivered to me.

Hughes also got up to help. “I bet,” he scoffed, making his way to the helmet racks.

He disconnected one from a charging port, then shoved it into my hands. “Strange how they scheduled an exercise between drops. That’s never happened before. Not that I can remember.”

A frustrated hand flew to encompass the room. “It’s not as if we don’t have enough work to do as is, without you guys damaging gear for shits and giggles.”

He shook his head then glared at me. “You know how hard it is to repair blade damage, shit-head? Do you?”

“Uh…” I shrugged. “Sorry about that. It wasn’t intentional, trust me.
